Why Do Yoga?

WHY DO YOGA?

Yoga is both a very complex and a very simple thing depending on how you look at it.  It is simple to those that see it only as exercise and it is a light to follow for those that delve into the deeper philosophical aspects. There are books galore attempting to explain, in many different ways, what Yoga “is.”  It is hard to explain because it is part structure, part historic method and part personal journey.

For me, in the beginning, yoga was a method to get out of my headspace that was full of anxiety and rooted in everything but the present moment.  My life at the time was dominated by huge life changes and trauma and an overwhelming career that left me utterly exhausted. I was an empty husk when I began my yoga journey, a totally blank slate and I wonder if that didn’t actually help yoga to quickly effect changes in my body and life.

As I began to feel better and better, doing yoga became more of a priority.  And thus began a dialog with myself both physically and psychologically that had been missing for a long time. Yoga can be an organic, interactive process that can help you develop a dialog with your inner self.

Once I personally became more grounded, I also became more expansive.  Yoga does that.  Every pose has a base, a grounding along with an action to create space into which you can feel the moment. Yoga is helping me find space and bringing me to a realization that I have control over what I let in that space.  It could be peace or it could be the angst of life. More and more I choose peace and joy.  More and more I choose the people, places and things that are good for me.

Yoga = Union, with yourself, your soul, the universe.

WHY NOT DO YOGA?
